Working together to transform the way people think about food waste and composting in Birmingham.
“If food waste were a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, behind the USA and China.”
Compost Culture is a project working to transform people’s views around food waste and composting supported by the National Lottery Community Fund.
Birmingham-based organisations General Public, Incredible Surplus, The Active Wellbeing Society, St Paul’s Community Development Trust, Birmingham Friends of the Earth & Crick Gardens are working in partnership to develop a pioneering programme of composting initiatives across the city where you can learn about turning food scraps into beautiful compost which can then be used for growing fresh, nutritious food locally.

Strategic aims
- Supporting strategic development at local and national level around one of the big questions relating to Climate Action in densely populated urban environments: how do we manage our food waste?
- Researching and testing a range of models for what an embedded food waste composting system will look like for a complex, culturally diverse urban environment.
- Sharing our learning and helping to build a resilient, self-sustaining network of composting and food growing activity across the city.
The Compost Culture project was conceived by General Public & developed with our project partners and the wider incredible Surplus community.
